Leaders of the anti-government 'Red Shirt' protests in Bangkok have surrendered, after troops stormed their camp. They say they gave themselves up to prevent more bloodshed. But it fuelled an increase in violence in the Thai capital, as determined demonstrators set buildings on fire - including a TV station and the stock exchange. The government's imposing a strict curfew across the city, which has been crippled by the unrest.

Another eight people have been killed in Bangkok as anti-government "Red Shirt" protesters continue to battle security forces on the streets of the capital. The total death toll over the past three days now stands at 24. It is unclear if those killed were all protesters but it is known that none of the dead were soldiers. Government troops meanwhile continue to surround the red shirt who have been camped in the centre of the capital for two months. Troops have also been declaring certain areas "live fire zones". This means security forces will use live ammunition against any protesters trying to enter these areas. Speaking for the first time since the latest round of violence began on Thursday, Thailand's prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva made it clear that his soldiers will not back down. A night time curfew has been extended for three more days in Bangkok and more than 20 of the country's provinces. The Thai goverment has declared that it has almost quelled 10 weeks of violent protests in the capital. While troops have regained control of the centre of Bangkok, other areas remain volatile. There have been pockets of violence, shooting and arson throughout the day. Since the beginning of the political crisis in mid-march at least 83 people have been killed.
